How long does it take for rats or mice to die after eating poison?

How long does it take for rat poison to work?

When the rate or mouse eats the poison, they stop feeding them and wander in search of water, and are killed after rambling around for a few days. The rat poisons mostly affect the brain, blood or the kidneys of the rats or mice. Further, these poisons are more likely to work faster in congested areas. Variations in their results to kill the mouse or rat can be classified as;

  • If the poison attacks on the rats lungs, it takes from 2 days to 12 hours for him to die.
  • In the case of internal bleedings, they die within 3 - 7 days.
  • It takes 3 - 5 days for rats or mice to die from dehydration.
  • Heart attack causes them to die in three to four days.
  • Death from central nervous system failure happens within 14 hours to 4 days.

Placement of rodenticides:

The effective working of rat poisons also depends upon their right placement. For example, the poison placed in a massively contaminated surface will kill the rats or mice in less time as compared to those poisons placed wrongly, without following the instructions.


The period, in which the rat killing poisons show their results, depends upon their characteristics. It is noted that if they are placed in the right space and contains quality chemicals, it will take only two to three days for them to kill a rat or a mouse. These poisons can be hazardous to human health so they should be kept at a place away from the reach of children and should be utilized using precautions by humans.
